Criteria for Entry

Minimum Swim Requirements

The ability to swim 200 m non-stop in the pool. I'm very happy swimmers bring flippers with them to this session if they have confidence issues however a 200 m minimum swim ability is necessary so you, and those around you, are safe.

Minimum Age

In the first instance please call Jenny (027 2423527) to discuss entry. Children under 16 years of age must be able to swim 400 m in the pool non-stop. During the sea swim session they need to be accompanied by a guardian who remains with them the whole time and who is a competent swimmer.

Wetsuits

Are highly recommended both before and after Xmas. Wetsuits can be hired from Swim T3.

Frequently Asked Questions

There will be a strong focus on skill development, confidence, safety and fitness. Sessions will be varied and structured.

Am I good enough to come to a Thursday session?

The Thursday session is aimed at improving swimmers sea-swimming skills so swimmers can enjoy events such as triathlons and open water swims. You can come along for general fitness and fun. There is a minimum swim requirement of 200 m non-stop swimming ability to access these sessions. Once at the session you will be divided in swim groups by confidence and ability level.

Where are the Thursday sessions held?

The majority of the sessions will be held at Freyberg Beach on Oriental Bay. When strong northerly winds are blowing (>er 20 kmph), with lots of whitecaps, we’ll swim at Greta Point Beach, Evans Bay, which is 5 mins travel away (towards the airport).

Can Sessions be Cancelled?

Yes. If there has been heavy rain and the council has notified the public that pollution levels are high in the harbour. If you have paid already the payment will be forwarded to the next swim session you attend. A major storm may also lead to cancellations. The Traction Fitness facebook page will be updated if the swim is to be cancelled.

Can I really get better in just a few sessions?

Most definitely! With a combination of knowledge, skills and practice it’s incredible how quickly my swimmers learn!

My problem is my technique, can you help?

We focus on sea swim technique however the coach of group 1 will often add technique tips into the session.

What happens if it’s really windy and rough?

Sessions will not be cancelled unless its for pollution reasons - sessions maybe moved. Wind and big waves will normally mean swims at Hataitai Beach, which is a lovely sanctuary away from the wind. The decision will be made on the day – Jenny will update the Traction Fitness Facebook page.

Can I just drop on down to a session without Registering?

You need to register at least once and before your first session. After you have registered once you are able to drop down without pre-registering. My preference is that you pay online rather bringing down cash payment.

Do I need a Wetsuit?

To ensure your own safety and that of the staff and other swimmers wetsuits are required during November due to the low sea temperature. Wetsuits can be hired or bought before the day from SWIMT3 - across the road from Freyberg Pool.

I’m really not happy in the sea, is this too advanced for me?

If you are able to swim 200 m non-stop in the pool we can get you swimming in the sea safely.

Are all swim sessions the same?

No, each session will be different. The focus of the session will change and may depend on the group and the conditions.

Do you teach kids and teenagers?

Yes, given they can swim 400 m freestyle and you contact Jenny beforehand for clearance. You will need to sign the Registration form on behalf of your child and join in with the session for safety reasons. Your child will be your responsibility during the session so you will need to have the skills to stay with them the whole session
