Saturday Wgtn Coastline Swim Series

Saturday mornings will see the Wellington Coastline Swim Series take to the brine to swim-off another piece of our coastal waterways. The swims are endurance and fun focused. The goal will be to safely swim as much of the Wellington coastline as the weather and sea conditions allow over the 2017/18 summer months.

I'm very excited at the prospect of doing something a little different this summer. A spirit of adventure, swim fitness and common sense is all that's required for a great time. 

I'm especially excited about the Round Matiu/Somes Island event on Feb 10th (moved due to event clashing)! This is bound to be the highlight of the summer endurance swims and a very doable distance for open water swimmers. I'm told it's the first official swim around the Island.

Conditions will necessitate flexibility in planning - start and finish points maybe altered on the morning of the swims - hence the 7:30 am meeting time. Please ensure you are signed up to the Traction Fitness Facebook account for ease of communication (link to the FB page above RHS).

With the exception of the Somes Island swim, courses will be set so swimmers remain within 50 m of the coastline at any point to assist in keeping everyone safe. Pre-swim safety briefing will take part prier to each event. 

There is a minimum swim requirement for the swims. You must be confident that you have the skills and fitness to swim your event on the day. If you are unsure if you have the skills you can always test this out on one of the Thursday evening swim sessions. If you have any doubts call Jenny to discuss (027 24 23527). There will be limited kayak support during the swims so the onus will be on swimmers to swim with a buddy & exit the water if required.

Thurs 6 pm Sea Swim Sessions

Thursday sea swim sessions are the only official coached sea swim training sessions in Wellington. The session is ideal for swimmers new to open water swimming situations or those swimmers who feel they want to continue learning but mix it up in a fun and challenging group training sessions.

Swimmers need to swim a minimum of 200 m non-stop in a pool situation.

Once you arrive at the session you will be split into groups by ability and coached within the group. We learn skills such as sighting, navigation, management of wave action, rounding buoys, how to start well, how to manage large group situations, etc. Along with the skill work comes the fitness and confidence improvements. 

We use Freyberg Beach as our base learning area however if it's windy we move around to Hataitai Beach. Click on the info button below, to the left, to learn more. Register before coming along. Please read the info on the link below.
