We learn so much from every event we enter - no matter how big or small the race is. There is a process of continued improvement. By taking the lessons from events we remind ourselves of the areas (physical, psychological, emotional, nutritional, self-management) that we can alter and improve next time. Many of these lessons are forgotten if we don't look back relatively quickly post-event and write them down.
